The Word Dept. playlist starts with the songs behind Words We Need. Not background music, but the reference material. These are records where the writing carries the weight. Some are direct, some are strange, some became public rituals. They're all here for the same reason: the words are doing the work.

Bill Withers says exactly what he means and leaves room for you in it. Bob Dylan does the opposite, fast and restless, language that won't sit still. Neil Diamond writes with a professional's control, then hands the song to the room. Lee Hazlewood makes a simple lyric land on tone and restraint alone. Christine McVie takes a hard moment and turns it toward movement. Brian Wilson proves precision and feeling can hold the same line.

This is where it starts, not where it stops. We'll keep adding as the collection grows. More writers, more words worth hearing.
